At the Modoc County Fair - 2007

Us at the county fair, 2007.

I have been with my husband for 8 years now, and as the girlfriend and wife of a wildland firefighter (he is an Engine Operator for the BLM, so he drives, runs the engine and the crew), I am used to the summertime when he has to go off-district and can be gone for 2 weeks at a time. Well, it is a million times different this summer for me. I miss him terribly this time, and he has only been gone for 4 days!! This is because of a few reasons; 1) we live in Likely — small and isolated (although only 20 minutes from the “big” town, where many of my friends live) so it can get a little lonely! Thank you to my Twitter and Facebook friends for the chats! 2) I’m not working at my dayjob (I work part-time at a school so we’re out for summer), only from home right now so I rarely leave my house! 3) We have our baby Miss Harper for the first fire season, and without Glenn coming home at night it’s only the 2 of us 24/7 — which I love, but it’s nice to let daddy take over for a little while, and it’s nice to have visitors.

Daddy time

I’m writing this post for Melissa’s “A Beautiful Life” blog party at The Inspired Room, and so I just want to publicly shout out a big “thank you for all you do for us” to my husband, Glenn, and to let him know how much we miss him around here! He works very, very hard for us and me, and his entire family, are so proud of him. But his off-district fire is actually perfect timing as his birthday is coming up, as is Harper’s first birthday (I’m surrounded by Leos!!) so he will be home for his birthday, and her party!!

He is the funniest guy I know (we laugh every day), we have a relationship that has grown amazingly (with our ups and downs, but it has all made us stronger), and it all gets better and better every day. I love you, honey!!! Be safe and come home soon!! Here are some of my favorite pictures of him and us.

Camping at West Valley Reservoir

Camping at West Valley Reservoir — using our camp trailer for the 1st time, 2006.  It snowed a lot, good thing we had a trailer!

Wow, I’ve had a lot of hairstyles over the years… 🙂  Love ya’, babe!  Thank you for giving me our beautiful baby girl, and thank you for being my handy-man around here!  You are the best!!

Exactly 1 year ago today, my husband Glenn and I became first time homeowners! We were living in our camp trailer out on his parent’s ranch (hee hee!) until we got the keys to our new home on July 1st, 2008!  And the inside was so ugly and disgusting and un-livable that we still lived in the camp trailer in our driveway for a couple weeks, especially because they were tearing up ancient carpets, which is not good for a pregnant lady to be around.  Our daughter joined us in our home a month and 3 weeks after we moved in, which was an early surprise (Glenn painted half of her room the night before I went into labor – a month and a week after moving in) and while Harper and I were in the hospital for 2 weeks Glenn came home and worked his butt off to get the rest of it ready for us!

On first glance the house was a little scary, old and dusty – it had been sitting on the market for almost 2 years! – but we could see it’s potential through the smoke residue and dirt.  It’s a great first home for us, and we are enjoying being homeowners…except when you’re trying to move 7 tons of gravel one shovel-full at a time! 🙂  I kid, I kid…the main thing I’ve learned is how much time it takes to get to where you want to be.  I still don’t feel like a single room of the house is “finished” and I don’t know if I ever will, but I think we’ve made a lot of progress over the past year!  What do you think??

Like all the other rooms, a work in progress, but it is definitely a livable bedroom!

I’m always looking at magazines and websites, wishing I had a bazillion dollars to spend so I could finish the house exactly how I’d like it, but after reminiscing over these photos today I’m pretty proud of how far we’ve come in a year, and I’m actually very thankful that we even have a roof over our head at all.  I’m actually very, very blessed in so many ways.

So happy anniversary to us, and feel free to leave a comment letting me know what you’re thankful for and celebrating today!  That reminds me…I’m celebrating my high school reunion this weekend, too!  Happy Independence Day, everyone!!

Blogging or bathroom?  That is the question.  Hehe!  We’ve spent a lot of time recently working on the bathroom plan, and it is coming into motion!  My handy-dandy husband ripped out the old shower surround and then put a new bright and shiny one up!  He also put up new trim and sealed everything!  I painted the walls (while I was home alone with our 9 month old – go me!), and he painted the ceiling because it would have taken me forever and he whipped it right out!  And last night he painted the new trim nice and white.  Now we just need the finishing touches; new light, new mirror (so we’ll have to paint a little more soon), new shower curtain and new towels.

We were going to re-finish the bathtub in white, but after reading the directions it just didn’t seem worth it.  It was very complicated, very toxic, and very easy to screw up!  Plus we couldn’t use our tub for 5-6 days.  So we decided to keep the green tub because the color won’t clash with the design, plus we are just so lucky to have a green tub!  Now I’ll quit talking and get to the pics.  Thanks for stopping by!!

Here is what it looked like back in July when we bought it.  Notice the lovely, faded flower motif on the surround.  Nice, huh?

And here is a shot after Glenn ripped everything out.

Here’s a tip: use the box the surround came in to make a template.

And now I begin to paint!

Ahhh…finally done!  Ceiling and everything!  We’ve never painted the ceiling the same color before, but we thought it would be nice to surround ourselves with this earthy brown.

As you can see it was quite a transformation over Memorial Day weekend. The room is a lot darker now, but I’ve found I can still put my makeup on, phew! I decided on a dark brown with purple undertones called “Pumpernickel” by Ace Hardware paints.  It was very hard to photograph because of the light and the reflections and the darkness, but you get the idea. The old shower curtain and towels are okay, but now that the room is so dark I’m looking forward to lighten it up with new towels and a new linen shower curtain. Plus the green and brick shower curtain and towels don’t match the pistachio bathtub. I’ve also decided that I want a clock in there so I don’t have to bring my phone in to watch the time when I’m getting ready.

So there’s what I’ve been working on…what projects are you hard at work on, or have finished and are proud of? I’d love to check them out!

Hello out there!!

So I’d like to post a little apology to you all. I really do love writing on this blog (and I love the comments and seeing my stats rise!!) so I feel bad that I haven’t been able to keep up with it lately!! I am really working on taking photos of all of our DIY projects to post some fun “how-to’s” but I feel like I’ve had one thing stop me after another!! My brand new camera is in the shop (it doesn’t read memory cards so I can only take about 7 pictures at a time – ANNOYING!!), I had to go out of town for a training, and then when we got back our internet was down! So I’ve been gone for about a week – and I’ve felt like I was missing an appendage without my internet or camera!! But I’m back, hopefully my camera will be soon, and I have about 30 draft posts waiting for the finishing touches – so check back soon for some fun stuff!!

I’d also like to say thank you for hanging in there with me!! And don’t forget – if you’d like any design advice or have a room you’d like to be redone, don’t hesitate to visit me at my new website: http://www.lindsaychristensendesign.com or e-mail me at lindsay@lindsaychristensendesign.com!

Thanks again for reading!!! xo, Lindsay (& Harper!)

…I am a recent Interior Design graduate.  I attended a university and received my Bachelor’s of Art in the wonderful profession that I call my purpose in life!  I am, however, living in a town of approximately 200 people.  Yes, you read it correctly; 200.  I am taking my time to get figure out my niche, plus I have a new baby girl, so I’m just moseying along at the moment.  That is why I am here, as are you if you are reading this.  I am trained in interior design, but I have an interest (self-taught) in web and graphic design as well.  In a county with only 10,000 people in it, I think my self-taught skills are probably more than most would be able to find locally anyway – so as usual, and if you know me, you won’t be surprised – I have my hands in everything and plan to continue along those lines with my business.  That is my ultimate goal – work from home to spend as much time as I can with my kid(s).

I’ll post more of my portfolio soon (yes, I have gotten a few jobs so far), but for now just trust me!  And if you have any suggestions on what to write about on here, feel free to let me know!

xo,

Lindsay

Here is my first official post on my new blog! I am testing out WordPress to catalog my design finds, inspirations, and to walk you through my creative process!

By the way, I’m Lindsay. New mom to a beautiful baby girl, wife to a wonderful husband and best friend, and a person with a creative soul trying to bust out! Plus I’d love to be able to run a design business from home and be with my baby girl 24/7.
